Association of Division III Independents

Names 2009 All-Independent Women's Basketball Teams

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Kayleigh Calandri, a senior guard from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Erica Davis, a senior forward from the University of Maine, Presque Isle, were named the co-players of the year as the All-Independent Women’s Basketball teams were announced today by the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I).

Calandri, a native of Alameda, Calif., averaged 17.2 points per game (second in the AD3I) and scored more points (464) than any other player in the 17-member association of independent schools.  She canned 47 percent of her three-point attempts (66-of-142), which was the third highest mark in Division III.  She also had impressive games where she hit nine three-point shots (ranked fourth) and tied for 12th for most points in a game with 38.  She finished her career with 10 school records, including the career scoring mark (1,496 points).

Davis led the UMPI Lady Owls with 20.6 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. The North Yarmouth, Maine, native also led her team in steals (5.2) and blocks (1.0) per game.  She notched 15 double-doubles, including seven games where she scored more than 25 points. She also set the UMPI single-game scoring record this season with 49 points.

The other members of the first team include Cara Sczepanski (University of Dallas); Jordan Osley (Mount Mary College); and (tie) Lauren Kamiyama (Chapman University); and Ally Tincknell (Finlandia University).

St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) freshman guard Ashley McQuillan was named the AD3I rookie of the year.  McQuillan, who hails from Brooklyn, New York, averaged 16 points.  She was named AD3I player of the week twice and was named the student-athlete of the month in December.

Carol Jue, head women’s coach at Chapman University, was named the coach of the year.  Jue led the Panthers to the NCAA tournament for the ninth consecutive year.  Chapman won the AD3I Women’s West Region Championship with victories over La Sierra and Nebraska Wesleyan.  Chapman recorded its third straight 20-win season and the fifth in the past six seasons.

The All-Independent Women’s Basketball teams were selected today by the women’s basketball coaches from AD3I member schools.
