 Association of Division III Independents
Names 2009 All-Independent Baseball Teams

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Chapman University third baseman Tristan Phillips and University of Dallas pitcher Philip Carkhuff earned top honors on the 2009 All-Independent Baseball teams named today by the Association of Division III Independents.

Phillips, a senior from El Cajon, CA, was named the player of the year after he hit a team-leading .436 with eight home runs and 60 runs batted in.  His .436 average is the second-highest in school history.  Phillips scored 39 runs and led the team with 75 hits, including 14 doubles.

Carkhuff, a sophomore from Marietta, GA, was named pitcher of the year after he went 8-3 with a 2.72 earned-run average.  In nine starts, he pitched six complete games and two shutouts.  He also notched 70 strikeouts in 72.2 innings.

Chapman, which received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, placed six players on the first team for the second consecutive year.  Chapman head coach Tom Tereschuk, who led Chapman to its seventh consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, was named the coach of the year for the third straight year. Chapman is the four-time West Region defending champions but is an underdog this year as the fifth seed.

Josh Ostrom, a pitcher from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and Jon Mendez, a catcher from St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn), were named co-rookies of the year.  Ostrom was a perfect 6-0 on the mound with a 2.91 ERA.  He also was the starting shortstop for NWU.  Mendez started all 33 games for St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) and hit .345 with two home runs and 39 RBI.

The players were selected by baseball coaches at member institutions of the Association of Division III Independents.
